Een wandeling langs het westelijk frontNa ingrijpende veranderingen was Anthony Seldon een tijdlang niet in staat om zijn leven opnieuw richting en inhoud te geven en hij besloot een 35-daagse pelgrimstocht te ondernemen van de Frans-Zwitserse grens naar het Kanaal. Het idee voor deze 1000 kilometer lange tocht was geïnspireerd door de brieven van een Britse soldaat in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, Alexander Dougles Gillespie. Hij droomde van een ‘via sacra’ die de mannen, vrouwen en kinderen van Europa konden lopen om niet alleen de gevallenen te eren en de verschrikkingen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in zich op te nemen, maar ook om eens na te denken over wat ‘vrede’ eigenlijk inhoudt. Gillespie sneuvelde tragisch genoeg enkele weken nadat hij zijn ouders over zijn droom had geschreven. Door een toevallige ontdekking in het archief van een van Engelands oudste scholen 100 jaar later kreeg Anthony het idee om deze ‘via sacra’ daadwerkelijk tot stand te brengen. De schrijver volgde de historische route van het westelijk front en doorkruiste Europa’s mooiste en meest tot de verbeelding sprekende landschappen, van de Vogezen, Argonne en Champagne tot de aangrijpende loopgraven van Arras, de Somme en Ieper. Onderweg worstelde hij met uitdroging en uitputting, hondenbeten, mierenbeten en blaren, maar ook met zichzelf.
