The Power of Stories

The result of a research project at the University of Palermo, this book attempts a multidisciplinary response to the psychological, educational and cultural demands and needs of the student population regarding gender representations and stereotypes. It is structured in three parts: the first is devoted to the "Psychodynamic Perspective", i.e., the detection and screening of representations of the self; the second is devoted to the "Pedagogical Perspective", i.e., the detection and analysis of the educational needs of the students of the University of Palermo thanks to an analysis of male and female representation and the related educational needs of a group of University of Palermo students; and the third to "The narrative workshop", aimed at analyzing the texts produced by the students and the proposed literary texts - by bell hooks, and Elena Ferrante - focused on the representation of the relations between the male and female universes. Finally, an appendix collects the texts produced by the students.

Un condizionamento avviene, per esempio, dal momento in cui i bambini e le bambine vengono introdotti alla cultura dominante (che per l'autrice si riassume nella locuzione 'patriarcato capitalista imperialista suprematista bianco'), specialmente attraverso i media, l'educazione scolastica e l'influenza - a volte negativa - dei loro compagni. Spaziando dall'estetica che perpetua l'immagine della donna bianca e bionda come 'più bella', sino alle rappresentazioni razzializzate dei personaggi neri in film e libri contemporanei, e prendendo spunto dalle biografie di Malcolm X e Martin Luther King, l'analisi di bell hooks è chirurgica nell'evidenziare quali siano i problemi e quanto facciano parte dell'impalcatura stessa su cui si regge la nostra società. Ma, come sempre, la sua scrittura non ci lascia imprigionati nell'evidenza di una questione sociale. Scrittrice e insegnante, bell hooks (pseudonimo di Gloria Jean Watkins, 1952-2021) è stata una delle figure più importanti del movimento antirazzista e femminista negli Stati Uniti e nel mondo. I suoi numerosi saggi costituiscono strumenti per educare a una società più equa, inclusiva e democratica, che si contrapponga agli ostacoli a questo cambiamento: patriarcato, suprematismo bianco, capitalismo consumista, militarismo. Tradurre in pratica questi assunti vuol dire riconoscere lo stretto legame tra potere e conoscenza e rifondare l'asse formativo della scuola, per formare cittadine/i globali - che vivono e agiscono in un mondo interdipendente e complesso.
