Liners 6: Australis
The ss ‘Australis’ was a well known ocean liner which entered service in 1940 as the ss ‘America’ for the United States Lines. The ship was sold to the Greek Chandris Lines in 1964 and served until 1977 very successfully on the route Western- Europe-Australia-New Zealand. This volume of Liners spans the history of the great liner from when she was purchased in 1964 until her sad wrecking in January 1994.

MS Rotterdam
Five weeks after the withdrawal of the legendary ‘Rotterdam’ (V), Holland America Line introduced the ‘Rotterdam’ (VI) in November 1997. With her gross tonnage of 59.652 she was and still is a remarkable ship among all cruiseliners. From 2012 the proud flagship of the HAL is sailing year-round from Rotterdam (The Netherlands). cruise belevenissenBert Lamers is een echte cruiseliefhebber. Als jong broekie scheepte Bert Lamers in mei 1969 in voor zijn eerste cruise. 54 jaar later heeft hij als maritiem journalist, reisleider en privépersoon 92 zeereizen, waarvan 71 cruises, met meer dan 100 verschillende schepen over de gehele wereld gemaakt. Van die 92 zeereizen heeft hij tussen 1988 en 2007 zesentwintig maritieme groepsreizen georganiseerd en begeleid. Tijdens al zijn zeereizen heeft de auteur heel bijzondere avonturen en belevenissen meegemaakt. De één was nog mooier en/of humoristischer dan de andere. In dit boek neemt Bert ons mee met cruise belevenissen die hij in die jaren meemaakte. In korte verhalen beschrijft hij deze op een humoristische manier. Daarbij worden de verhalen prachtig geïllustreerd met voornamelijk zelfgemaakte foto's. De trossen kunnen los, dus laten we maar gaan cruisen! Bert Lamers werd eind maart 1950 in Rotterdam (Charlois) geboren. Al op heel vroege leeftijd had de haven en de scheepvaart zijn warme belangstelling. Vanaf zijn 15e jaar begon hij de schepen ook te fotograferen. Zijn archief omvat thans zo’n 100.000 ‘all over the world’ gemaakte foto’s van hoofdzakelijk passagiers-, cruiseen veerschepen. Vanaf 1977 is Bert over de scheepvaart in het maritieme maandblad De Blauwe Wimpel gaan schrijven, ook organiseerde en begeleide hij maritieme groepsreizen. Samen met zijn echtgenote Carla woont Bert in zijn geboortestad Rotterdam.

The s.s. 'America' was an ocean liner which entered service in 1940 for the United States Lines. She was designed by the famous naval architect William Francis Gibbs. In the 54 years between her introduction and her wrecking in 1994, she had eight different owners (of which one twice) and sailed under the names of 'America' (carrying this name three different times), 'West Point', 'Australis', 'Italis', 'Noga', 'Alferdoss' and 'American Star'. She served most in passenger service as s.s. 'America' and s.s. 'Australis'. In this number of Liners the story of this remarkable ship.

Laid down as the freighter Dinteldyk, the into S.S. Ryndam renamed vessel was completed in 1951 as a passenger liner. After a year she was followed by sister ship S.S. Maasdam. The ships were revolutionary and were called "the economy twins". Both ships have had a long and special career.
