Born on December 15th, 1896 in Brooklyn, New York to German immigrants, she grew up poor in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and attended Girl's High School. These experiences served as the framework to her first novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. After marrying George H. E. Smith, a fellow Brooklynite, she moved with him to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he pursued a law degree at the University of Michigan. At this time, she gave birth to two girls and waited until they were in school so she could complete her higher education. Although Smith had not finished high school, the university allowed her to enroll in classes.
Paul Green
North Carolina Writers on the Legacy of the State's Most Celebrated Playwright"Not only a welcome addition to our state's and the South's literary history, it is an absolutely necessary one. This is as thoughtful and bountiful a collage of critiques of Green, a pioneer in the southern literary renascence of the past century, and his world of fellow writers and collaborators (Richard Wright! Kurt Weill!) as one is ever likely to see, and the work is just as challenging as it is broadening."—Bland Simpson, author of North Carolina: Land of Water, Land of Sky “Paul Green: North Carolina Writers on the Legacy of the State’s Most Celebrated Playwright gathers essayists of grace and tremendous precision who remap the literary terrain of Paul Green through well informed, detailed explorations of his craft, artistic life, and political mission. This blended compilation of informative essays represents deep thought, vigorous analysis, and offers a multitude of perspectives and insights that present new thoughtful questions for reimagining the work of Paul Green.”—Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina Poet Laureate
