De internationale roem van Boris Pasternak berust op één roman, Dokter Zjivago, terwijl hij in Rusland in de eerste plaats als groot dichter bekendstaat. De verhalen die hij schreef, al vanaf het vroegste begin van zijn carrière, vormen een deel van zijn oeuvre dat met deze uitgave in de Russische Bibliotheek onder het stof vandaan wordt gehaald. Zijn verhalen gebruikte Pasternak om de thema's van zijn gedichten uit te werken; de aandachtige lezer proeft in zijn proza hetzelfde verwoede streven naar precisie als in zijn poëzie. Hij schrijft geconcentreerde en poëtische verhalen, gericht op het oproepen van sensaties en het peilen van het sublieme, waarin hij de klassieke opbouw van een verhaal, chronologie en duiding aan zijn laars lapt. Hij weet daarmee weg te komen door zijn minutieus beschreven zintuiglijke waarnemingen en uitgesponnen, in nonchalante verhaallijnen gevatte metaforen. Zijn stijl is complex, maar altijd gekenmerkt door een bovenmatige interesse in het leven en de zintuigelijke waarneming van de werkelijkheid. Zijn toon is spontaan en geloofwaardig, omdat er altijd sprake is van een oprechte hang naar realisme, een poging het geheim van de werkelijkheid te benaderen. Pasternak is er bij leven slechts twee keer in geslaagd een bundeling van zijn verhalen te publiceren: in 1925 verscheen de bundel Verhalen en in 1933 Luchtwegen, waaruit het lange autobiografische verhaal 'Vrijgeleide' op het laatst werd geweerd door de censuur. Dit deel in de Russische Bibliotheek bevat al zijn voltooide verhalen en de eerste hoofdstukken van de onvoltooide roman Patriks notities.

Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (born 4 April 1862 N.S. - 31 May 1945) was a Russian post-impressionist painter. He was the father of the poet and novelist Boris Pasternak. Leonid Pasternak was born in Odessa to a Jewish family on 4 April 1862. The family claimed to be distantly descended, in one line, from Isaac Abrabanel, the famous 15th century Jewish philosopher and treasurer of Portugal, although no independent evidence of this existed. Leonid's father made an income by renting out a guest-house.
