Herbert George Wells (Bromley, Kent, 21 september 1866 - Londen, 13 augustus 1946) was een Brits schrijver, bekend van zijn sciencefictionverhalen en -romans, in het bijzonder The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man en The Time Machine. Wells, gepubliceerd in 1904.

    Early Socialist Writers in Britain

William Morris, Bernard Shaw, and H. G. Wells

This book examines the political thought expressed in the imaginative fiction of three prominent British writers and its contribution to the development of socialism, particularly through the prism of the Labour Party. It traces this influence from the late nineteenth century through much of the twentieth century and concludes by considering its relevance to socialism and the Labour Party in the twenty-first century. The three writers—William Morris, Bernard Shaw, and H. G. Wells—first met at meetings of the Socialist League in London and knew each other well. However, their hopes and expectations for the future differed profoundly, as did the nature of their respective contributions to the development of socialism in Britain. This book explores the political philosophy of each writer as manifested primarily in their creative work and assesses the impact of that work on the evolution of socialism in Britain.

    Il giocatore di croquet

Anno 1936. Introduzione Maria Teresa Chialant. The Way the World Is Going

"The Way the World Is Going, Guesses & Forecasts of the Years Ahead" is a provocative collection of essays and articles by the visionary thinker and novelist H.G. Wells. In this work, Wells provides a fascinating glimpse into his perspective on the trajectory of human civilization during a period of intense global uncertainty. Throughout the volume, he explores a wide array of topics, including the future of war, the necessity of a world state, the evolution of democracy, and the potential impact of scientific advancements on daily life. Wells applies his characteristic intellectual rigor and imaginative foresight to analyze the social, political, and economic tensions of the late 1920s, attempting to predict how they would shape the coming decades. He addresses the role of the League of Nations, the influence of emerging superpowers, and the shifting dynamics of global communication and transport. As both a historical document and a testament to Wells's enduring legacy as a social critic, "The Way the World Is Going, Guesses & Forecasts of the Years Ahead" remains a compelling read for those interested in the history of futurism and the evolution of political thought. Wells's insights offer a unique window into the anxieties and hopes of the interwar period, reflecting a world on the brink of profound transformation. The Sea Lady

"The Sea Lady" is a masterful blend of fantasy and social satire by the renowned author H. G. Wells. The story follows the unexpected arrival of a beautiful mermaid, who calls herself Doris, at a bustling British seaside resort. Unlike traditional mythological tales, Wells uses this supernatural premise to cast a critical and often humorous eye on the rigid social conventions and hypocrisies of Edwardian life. As the mysterious Sea Lady integrates into the lives of the Bunting family and their social circle, her presence acts as a catalyst for romantic complications and philosophical reflection. She represents an alluring yet dangerous alternative to the mundane reality of human existence, challenging the characters to confront their deepest desires and the limitations of their structured world. With its sharp wit and imaginative depth, "The Sea Lady" explores themes of mortality, the pursuit of beauty, and the conflict between societal duty and personal longing. This work remains a significant example of Wells's ability to weave fantastical elements into a poignant critique of the human condition, offering readers a captivating narrative that is both whimsical and profoundly thought-provoking.
