She hails from Brno, Czech Republic. Helena Harastova is a writer, translator, and mother. She lives and works in her small studio surrounded by dogs, cats, rabbits, and a chicken named Calimero. She graduated from the Nemo Academy of Digital Arts as an entertainment designer and has since worked as a children's book illustrator. My Memory Goblin Is Making Me Forget!
"Could Hugo’s daily setbacks be the work of a memory goblin haunting him? Hugo’s forgetfulness leads to lost belongings, overlooked responsibilities, and messed-up schedules. Not fun. Hugo suffers so much that he imagines a “sneaky little trickster” who might be behind it all, undermining him. Artistically inclined Hugo even provides a droll labelled portrait of the creature! We follow Hugo through his disasters: missing a soccer session with his friends because he’s looking for his cleats, neglecting to take his puppy for a walk, and forgetting about a field trip. Even his short-term memory is wonky. Then Hugo finally decides to make some changes. He implements common-sense steps: early preparation, checklists, calendars and scheduling planners, and other memory helpers, like mnemonics. He also enlists help from trusted adults and peers and rewards himself when he does well. Hugo’s forgetfulness doesn’t vanish, but he tames the goblin. A final spread summarizes all the strategies covered. This Czech import offers useful advice, presented in a gentle, nonpreachy way. In amusing vignettes against minimal backgrounds, tousle-haired, jug-eared, tan-skinned Hugo and other big-eyed, loose-limbed kids, who vary in skin tone, are rendered with specificity, along with the cute but troublesome goblin. A practical, visually engaging approach to a common problem." —Kirkus Reviews

My Distraction Troll Won't Let Me Focus!
"Gr 1-5–This insightful addition to the “Keep Your Rascals Under Control” series introduces Hannah, a light-skinned girl struggling with a common internal foe: her “Distraction Troll.” The narrative follows Hannah through a relatable school day of missed cues and lost time, from morning routines to a challenging quiz, and finally to a bedtime delayed by wandering thoughts. Haraštová expertly deconstructs executive functioning struggles—such as “topic-hopping” in conversation and losing track of time—without tethering them to a specific clinical ¬diagnosis. This universal approach makes the content accessible to all children, regardless of whether they have a formal ADHD diagnosis. The book’s structure is highly interactive; each chapter concludes with a reflective question to prompt self-awareness, such as “What are some ways that tuning out can cause problems?” When Hannah eventually enlists the help of a purple-haired Focus Fairy, the tone shifts toward empowerment. Dercalíková’s charming cartoon illustrations depict the troll as a whimsical, polka-dotted puffball, softening the frustration of the character’s challenges. The final pages offer a ¬robust summary of strategies, presented in clear bullet points for easy reference. ¬VERDICT A comprehensive and compassionate resource for navigating focus-related challenges, this is an essential purchase for school counselors and primary educators looking to bolster their SEL ¬collections." —Heidi Dechief, School Library Journal "This Czech import, the second in an ongoing series, follows a youngster dealing with concentration challenges and time-blindness. In the first Rascals book, Haraštová described how the memory goblin wreaked havoc on young Hugo, resulting in misplaced belongings, neglected schedules and commitments, wandering thoughts, and missed responsibilities. Here, brown-haired, tan-skinned Hannah has similar troubles, all rooted in a lack of focus: unfinished work, careless mistakes, a messy room. She also finds herself swiftly switching hobbies and interests, leaping from topic to topic while conversing with others, and losing track of time. Her problems take concrete form in the distraction troll, a goofy, snaggle-toothed creature with yellow fur, stick limbs, and polka-dotted wings that resemble Hannah’s hairbows. In need of help, Hannah imagines the focus fairy, a hip-looking, beige-skinned, purple-haired winged creature rocking knee-length boots and a minidress. With assistance from her new friend, Hannah relies on brain-strengthening games (word searches, mazes) to hone her concentration and learns to assess new hobbies before jumping in. Haraštová includes plenty of other useful, well-explained suggestions: organizing tasks into steps and doing the dull ones first, taking breaks, accepting help, confiding in adults, and practicing self-care. Derčalíková’s amusing, colorful illustrations are attention-grabbing, and the addition of new tactics and strategies will expand the audience for the series. Fun and practical." —Kirkus Reviews "This non-fiction self-help book for children and teens summarizes, through the character of Hannah and her struggles, several typical problems shared by “people with distraction trolls” and offers advice on how to overcome these problems by recruiting the help of a “focus fairy.” All of this is accompanied by cute illustrations." —Daria S., Blogger

As soy yo!
Concete mejor a ti mismo y a los dems"Gr 1-3–This unique nonfiction picture book takes a wonderful approach to discussing different characteristics and personalities people may have, and how emotional responses to situations are shaped by their experiences. Differences between characteristics, skills, and emotions are defined, and spreads are dedicated to different facets of personality such as being impulsive, empathetic, and timid. Several examples for each are given, along with what distinguishes them and some benefits and downsides of having them. In one spread, Manuela is shown as often daydreaming and not really paying attention due to having a great imagination. While this may result in lack of focus at times, it can also lead to creation, such as the inventions Manuela’s father creates. Readers may see reflections of themselves in some of the characters and will come to understand why some individuals may be one way or another, as the book does a wonderful job of showing people’s behavior in different situations. Illustrations are colorful, detailed, and eye-catching and present different people in a variety of settings. The Spanish text is clear and comforting, explaining behaviors well and offering supporting words and encouragement to readers who may want to overcome certain characteristics such as timidity, as well as offering advice that helps readers become more understanding. ¬VERDICT A wonderful way to discuss behavior and personality traits with younger readers, this informative Spanish title is an excellent addition to school and public libraries." —Selenia Paz, School Library Journal, Starred Review "Haraštová offers an overview of different personality traits in this extended social-emotional reference. An opening chapter offers key definitions (of characteristic, ability, emotion) while establishing the book’s live-and-let-live tone: “Everybody’s different!” The 10 chapters that follow each center on fictional children (“This is Fatimah”) and two characteristics (“Sometimes Fatimah is unruly”/ “Sometimes Fatimah is energetic”). Sidebars further clarify the nature of the traits while gently describing some of their positive and negative effects. Text boxes prompt reflection with the goal of self-awareness (“How do you know you’re being unruly?”). Contextualizing examples occasionally veer into stereotype (“Two chatty ladies were babbling”) and pearl-clutching (about a child desiring cake for dinner: “Just imagine what might have happened if she had succeeded!”). Elsewhere, though, there’s a subtlety to the pairings’ distinctions (shyness and thoughtfulness, stubbornness and perseverance), which are illustrated in painterly depictions by Kobern that include figures portrayed with various abilities and skin tones. Ages 6–9." —Publishers Weekly

Getting to know yourself and others better"PreS-Gr 3–Paired concepts such as “hasty and brave” or “oversensitive and perceptive” are explored through illustrations that effectively capture the characteristics along with multiple examples of children who demonstrate these personality traits. Using supportive language, the author explores the ¬concepts and offers ways for children to handle this self-knowledge to improve in areas that might cause them distress. When discussing shyness, Haraštová provides five practical tips to overcome shyness while also affirming that shy people “are the unsung heroes of everyday life, because they face challenging situations and manage to deal with them.” The presentation is extremely well done and this title, while too long to read in a single sitting, will be immensely useful for classroom SEL instruction and other arenas where children are learning about what makes themselves, and others, unique. A variety of tips and support are provided, which will be appreciated by children and adults alike. VERDICT Celebrating the diversity of the human experience in language through well-illustrated examples, this title provides a plethora of opportunities for discussion as adults try to help young people navigate the human experience and celebrate their uniqueness." —John Scott, School Library Journal, Starred Review "Haraštová offers an overview of different personality traits in this extended social-emotional reference. Ages 6–9." —Publishers Weekly "I thought this was a very insightful book. It goes through essentially the same characteristic, ability or emotion can be done in a good or bad manner. For example, while being talkative can be perceived negatively, being communicative is important. These aren't necessarily negative, but can cause negative situtations to arise. Illustrations are gentle with muted colors and not abrassive at all, and I think this would be great to discuss things with your child should one of the listed be affecting a child's life." —Sara Reiser, Librarian "Oh my goodness this book is absolutely wonderful!!! I so wish I had a book like this growing up. Honestly, I think the book would even be helpful to a lot of adults. I love how gentle this book is, it teaches you without any hint of judgement. I love that it teaches you to be kind and patient with yourself, you can’t help who you are but you can learn to not let your natural tendencies get in the way of things (like friendships)." —NetGalley-Reviewer
