Het Communistisch Manifest

Ruim 175 jaar geleden publiceerden Karl Marx en Friedrich Engels ‘Het Communistisch Manifest’. Het werd één van de invloedrijkste teksten in de wereldgeschiedenis. In 'Het manifest' analyseerden Marx en Engels in klare taal hoe het kapitalistisch systeem enkel ten goede komt aan een kleine elite en riepen ze op tot de ontmanteling ervan. Het manifest heeft generaties revolutionairen geïnspireerd en vormde hét denkkader voor mensen die willen strijden voor een betere wereld. In deze nieuwe uitgave in samenwerking met socialistisch tijdschrift ‘Jacobin Nederland’ wordt de klassieke tekst op toegankelijke wijze toegelicht en van context voorzien, met een inleiding van Hannah van Binsbergen en een leeswijzer van Helmer Stoel. In spraakmakende essays laten Harriët Bergman, Grâce Ndjako en Reijer Hendrikse daarnaast zien hoe het manifest relevant is voor de sociale en ecologische strijd van de eenentwintigste eeuw.

Herman Gorter (1864-1927) was een van de meest geliefde en vernieuwende dichters uit de Nederlandse literatuurgeschiedenis. Velen zullen zich bijvoorbeeld 'Een nieuwe lente en een nieuw geluid' herinneren, de beginregels van zijn grote epos Mei. Gorter schreef veel over verlangen en liefde, en over de natuur. Hij wou het allerliefst één zijn met wat hij waarnam. Zijn inspiratie vond hij in de natuur, een tijdlang ook in de filosofie, en in de tweede helft van zijn leven leken de antwoorden die hij zocht in het socialisme te liggen. Maar de meest constante verzachting en verlichting vond Gorter bij de vrouwen van wie hij hield. Zijn liefde voor hen is door deze bloemlezing als vanzelf de rode draad geworden.

Mei

Mei geldt als een van de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste gedichten uit de Nederlandse literatuurgeschiedenis. Het epos wordt historisch gezien beschouwd als de ultieme literaire uiting van de Beweging van Tachtig, een schrijverscollectief dat streefde naar esthetische vernieuwing, individualisme en het loslaten van de destijds gangbare moralistische poëzie. Het gedicht vertelt het allegorische verhaal van de jonge vrouw Mei, de personificatie van de lentemaand. Zij komt op uit de zee en trekt door een geïdealiseerd Hollands landschap. Tijdens haar reis ontmoet zij verschillende figuren uit de Noordse en Griekse mythologie. De kern van het verhaal draait om haar liefde voor de blinde god Balder, die staat voor de absolute, pure ziel en de onbewogen muziek. Wanneer Balder haar afwijst omdat hij geen aardse liefde kan beantwoorden, volgt de onvermijdelijke neergang van Mei. Het epos eindigt met haar vroege dood en begrafenis in de herfst. In deze uitgave is de oorspronkelijke tekst van Mei behouden, zonder aanpassingen in spelling, taalgebruik of grammatica. Hierdoor kan het werk in zijn meest pure, authentieke vorm worden beleefd.

Herman Gorter (November 26, 1864, Wormerveer - September 15, 1927, Brussels) was a Dutch poet and socialist. He was a leading member of the Tachtigers, a highly influential group of Dutch writers who worked together in Amsterdam in the 1880s, centered around De Nieuwe Gids (The New Guide). Gorter's first book, a 4,000 verse epic poem called "Mei" ("May"), sealed his reputation as a great writer upon its publication in 1889, and is regarded as the pinnacle of Dutch Impressionist literature. Gorter rapidly followed this up with a book of short lyric poetry simply called "Verzen" ("Verses") in 1890, which, after the initial bad reviews, was equally hailed as a masterpiece.

The Communist Party of the Netherlands was a Dutch communist political party. The CPN is one of the predecessors of the GreenLeft. In 1907 Ceton and D. Wijnkoop founded De Tribune (The Tribune), a magazine in which they criticized the leadership of the SDAP of which they were members. They were still oriented towards orthodox Marxism and expected a proletarian revolution and opposed the leadership of the SDAP, who were more oriented towards more a revisionist ideology and a parliamentary and reformist political strategy. At a party congress in Deventer 1908 the leadership of the SDAP demanded that they stop publishing De Tribune or be expelled from the party. Wijnkoop and Ceton refused and they and their supporters, including the poet Herman Gorter, lost their membership to the SDAP. This conflict took place in almost all European Socialist parties, but the SDP was one of the parties founded as an orthodox Marxist split. In 1909 dissenters founded a new party called the Social-Democratic Party (SDP).
