Jean-Joseph Gaume, né à Fuans (Doubs) le 5 mai 1802 et mort le 19 novembre 1879, est un prêtre catholique, théologien et essayiste français. Il entre au séminaire de Besançon où il reçoit l'enseignement de son frère aîné, de l'abbé Doney et de l'abbé Gousset. Il est fortement impregné des écrits de l'abbé Nicolas-Sylvestre Bergier (en particulier son Dictionnaire de théologie), et des influences mennaisienne et liguorienne. Il est ordonné en 1825. Vicaire à Vesoul, il est nommé professeur de théologie au grand séminaire de Nevers en 1827 - sur recommandation de l'abbé Philippe Gerbet. Supérieur du petit séminaire de Nevers (1828-31), chanoine titulaire (1828), puis vicaire général de 1843 à 1852.

Jacques Pierre Louis Marie Joseph Puthod, né le 28 septembre 1769 à Bâgé-le-Châtel (Ain), est un général de la Révolution et du Ier Empire. Fait baron d'empire par Napoléon Ier (1809), il fut élevé au rang de vicomte par Louis XVIII en 1814. Il entra comme volontaire, le 26 octobre 1785, au régiment de la Couronne (devenu 45e). Gendarme (sous-lieutenant), compagnie Dauphin, il rejoignit son corps à Lunéville le 17 mars 1787. Ayant été licencié, il passa lieutenant au 3e bataillon de l'Ain le 12 décembre 1791, et au régiment d'infanterie colonel-général le 20 mai 1792. Le 22 août suivant, admis à l'état-major général, il fut nommé, le 13 septembre, capitaine au même corps.

James Joseph Magennis

James Joseph Magennis VC (surname originally McGinnes) (27 October 1919 - 12 February 1986) was a Belfast-born recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was the only native of Northern Ireland to receive the Victoria Cross for Second World War service.[2] Magennis was part of several operations involving X-Craft midget submarines in attacks on Axis ships. In July 1945 Magennis was serving on HMS XE3 during Operation Struggle. During an attack on the Japanese cruiser Takao in Singapore, Magennis showed extraordinary valour and bravery by leaving the submarine for a second time in order to free some explosive charges that had got caught. His commanding officer Lieutenant Ian Fraser was also awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 31 July 1945 during the Operation.

Hiram Berdan (September 6, 1824 - March 31, 1893) was an American engineer and military officer, world-renowned marksman, and guiding force behind the famed United States Sharpshooters during the American Civil War. He was the inventor of the Berdan rifle, the Berdan centerfire primer and numerous other weapons and accessories. Berdan was born in Phelps, a small town in Ontario County, New York. A mechanical engineer in New York City, he had been the top rifle shot in the country for fifteen years prior to the Civil War.

John E. Bendix

Bendix (August 28, 1818 - October 8, 1877) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War who commanded two different New York regiments and then a brigade of infantry in Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater. He survived a serious wound at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. He was noted as a prolific recruiter and organizer, and after the war, as a general, he helped organize the postbellum state militia that later became the New York Guard.

Abbott was posthumously awarded the grade of brevet brigadier general, United States Volunteers, to rank from August 1, 1864, and the grades of brevet lieutenant colonel, brevet colonel and brevet brigadier general, United States Army, all to rank from March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of the Wilderness, where he was killed in action.

Louis-François Jauffret, pédagogue, poète et fabuliste, est né à La Roquebrussanne (Var) le 4 octobre 1770 et mort à Marseille le 11 décembre 1840. Frère de Gaspard-André Jauffret, évêque de Metz, de Jean-Baptiste Jauffret, directeur de l'institution impériale des sourds-muets de Saint-Pétersbourg et de Joseph Jauffret, maître des requêtes au conseil d'état. Issu d'une famille de notables de Provence (La Roquebrussanne), Louis-François Jauffret commence ses études chez un précepteur, puis chez les Jésuites d'Aix-en-Provence puis à partir de 1783 chez les Oratoriens de Marseille et enfin à Paris au collège Sainte-Barbe en 1785. Très précoce, muni d'une mémoire prodigieuse, il éveille tôt l'attention de ses professeurs. Il reçoit son brevet de bachelier le 31 juillet 1788. Pendant ses études, Louis-François est surveillé par son frère l'abbé Gaspard-André Jauffret (futur évêque de Metz), alors prêtre à Saint-Sulpice (Paris).

Bussey was born in Hubbard, Ohio, in 1833. His father, Reverend A. Bussey, was a Methodist minister. He moved with his father, in 1837, to Indiana. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel. A journey to Morocco in 1872 strongly influenced his early artistic development and lead him to produce Romantic scenes under the spell of Orientalism. Among his noted works in this vein are Last Rebels, Justice in the Harem (both in the Luxembourg Gallery), Les Chérifas, and Moroccan Prisoners (Bordeaux). His large canvas, The Entrance of Mahomet II into Constantinople (Toulouse Museum), received a medal in 1876.

Henry Stanton Burton (1819-1869) was a graduate of West Point, a career American Army officer who served in the Second Seminole War, Mexican American War and the American Civil War. Henry Stanton Burton was born at West Point, New York on May 9, 1819. Recommended from Vermont, Burton graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1839 and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. 3rd Artillery Regiment. From 1839 to 1842, he served in the Florida Indian War and on November 11, 1839 was promoted 1st Lieutenant. From 1843 to 1846 he was assistant instructor of infantry and artillery tactics at West Point.
