Di questa, La genesi della scienza rintraccia le radici proprio nel Medioevo, sfatando molti miti duri a morire: non è vero che i medievali pensavano che la Terra fosse piatta, né che bisognò attendere Colombo per «dimostrare» che fosse sferica; nessuno è finito al rogo per le sue opinioni scientifiche; Copernico non visse nel timore di subire persecuzioni, né alcun Papa ha mai scomunicato comete o provato a bandire la dissezione umana e il numero zero. Al contrario, risalgono al Medioevo tutta una serie di sorprendenti scoperte e invenzioni in ambito scientifico e tecnologico: sia gli occhiali che gli orologi meccanici, per esempio, sono comparsi nell'Europa del secolo XIII. Nella stessa area geografica, inoltre, idee e strumenti provenienti dall'Estremo Oriente come la bussola, la polvere da sparo e la stampa furono perfezionati e utilizzati in ambiti prima di allora e altrove impensabili.
