James Kirkwood, Jr. (August 22, 1924 - April 21, 1989) was an American playwright, author and actor. In 1976 he received the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the Broadway hit A Chorus Line. Kirkwood was born in Los Angeles, California. His father James Kirkwood, Sr. was an actor and director in silent films and his mother was actress Lila Lee. After their divorce, he spent much of his time with his mother's family in Elyria, Ohio where he graduated from high school. From 1953 to 1957 he played Mickey Emerson on the CBS soap opera Valiant Lady. Kirkwood wrote the semi-autobiographical novel There Must Be a Pony, which was made into a television film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Wagner.

Barbara Castleton (September 14, 1894 - December 23, 1978) was an American silent film actress. Castleton appeared in motion pictures from 1914 through 1923, accumulating twenty-eight screen credits. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Castleton was one of the lower echelon stars who made films for Samuel Goldwyn Studio, along with Cullen Landis, James Kirkwood, and Rowland Lee. The company's major stars were Madge Kennedy, Geraldine Farrar, Will Rogers, and Tom Moore. Her first performance as a film actress came in The Ordeal (1914). She had the lead in Branding Iron (1920), a film directed by Reginald Barker. Her first husband was George W. Zimmerman, an attorney from Vancouver, British Columbia. Castleton won a divorce suit from Zimmerman in October 1921 in Reno, Nevada. She contended that he gambled and lived beyond his income. The decree was granted on ground of cruelty. Castleton wed playwright Willard Mack in June 1920.

James Kirkwood, Sr. (February 22, 1875, Grand Rapids, Michigan - August 24, 1963, Woodland Hills, California) was an American actor and director. He debuted on screen in 1909 and was soon playing leads for D.W. Griffith. He started directing in 1912, and became a favorite of Mary Pickford. In 1923 he married actress Lila Lee; with her, he had a son, James Kirkwood, Jr., who became a writer. His directing career fizzled in 1920, but he continued acting well into the 1950s. Kirkwood's film career would eventually span more than two hundred films over nearly a half century. Many years later his son, James Jr., would become a successful writer, winning both a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for A Chorus Line.

With nineteen main characters, it is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers. The original Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Buffalo, N.Y. native Michael Bennett, was an unprecedented box office and critical hit, receiving 12 Tony Award nominations and winning nine of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running production in Broadway history up to that time. It remains the longest running Broadway musical originally produced in the United States, and the fourth longest-running Broadway show ever. The show has enjoyed many successful productions worldwide and was revived on Broadway in 2006.
