Van oude mensen is een reisverslag uit het land dat we ooit allemaal zullen bewonen. Adler beschrijft haar eigen ervaringen, en gaat erover in gesprek met collega-schrijfsters Mona Ozouf en Annie Ernaux. Het boek begint als een literaire en filosofische oefening over wat ouder worden kan betekenen, maar wordt gaandeweg een aanklacht tegen de manier waarop de samenleving met haar oudste burgers omgaat.
