The Expansion Project
SHORTLISTED FOR A NERO BOOK AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE GOLDSMITHS PRIZE Plans for the expansion of the Capmeadow Business Park are in full swing - its mission is to become the greatest business park in the region. Tom Crowley, a mid-level employee, loses his daughter at 'bring your daughter to work day'. He raises the alarm, and his colleagues rush to help him find her. Eventually, after no sign of her is found, it transpires she was never there. And yet, as time goes on, Tom still cannot reconcile that she is really at home. Refusing to accept that she is safe, Tom continues to search for her in the maze of corridors and impossible multi-dimensional spaces that make up his place of work... Because Capmeadow is expanding in unexpected ways, a Liaison Officer becomes the central focus for complaints about how the expansion is impacting the lives of the employees - unexpected buildings, years-long business days, cursed farmers' markets, and corridors of the mind are draining the life from Tom and everyone he works with. Years pass, and Tom remains at the company, convinced he is in the presence of his now adult daughter. But has he judged it correctly? And can anything go back to the way it was??

Travellers in the Mediterranean: Linguistic and Cultural Encounters
Spanning a variety of journeys from the nineteenth century to modern times, this collection of essays o ers important insights into cultural encounters, practices and perceptions, as American, Arab, British and French travellers experienced and still experience them in the Mediterranean, and in countries such as Greece, Italy, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. Through an investigation of travelogues, diaries, letters, novels, poems, tourist guides, and blogs, the authors of this collection navigate the intricate relationship between Self and Other. In so doing, they contribute to a wider understanding of travel - and of writing about travel - in mediating cultural exchange, while shedding light on the major challenges posed by issues of stereotyping and socio-cultural bias.

Storytelling as a Cultural Practice
Storytelling as a cultural practice permeates all phases and areas of human life and opens up possible worlds. From their earliest days, children grow into a culture of storytelling, acquire language and literature, develop writing skills, and learn to communicate through storytelling in multimodal ways: orally and in writing, by playing, drawing, designing, singing, dancing and more. Through the process of narrating, experiences are structured, identities are formed, social contexts are shaped, and desires and futures are imagined. Narrative connects different times in history, various disciplinary fields in education and diverse linguistic-cultural spaces, but it also requires time and space itself. Against the background of an educational landscape that is currently competence-oriented, the question arises as to what role the art of storytelling plays in educational contexts, and what possibilities it opens up for learning. This edited volume aims to address this question, theoretically and empirically, from pedagogical and linguistic perspectives.

Lingua madre Duemilaventiquattro.
