New Gothic Art
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. New Gothic Art is a contemporary art movement that emphasizes darkness and horror. The style began with the "Gothic" exhibition organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, curated by Christoph Grunenberg, which took place April 24 - July 6, 1997. This exhibit included work by Jake and Dinos Chapman, Mike Kelley, Gregory Crewdson, Robert Gober, Jim Hodges, Douglas Gordon, Abigail Lane, Tony Oursler, Alexis Rockman, and Cindy Sherman. Gavin's 2008 book Hell Bound continued to theorize the existence of the movement. She has also referred to the style as "the art of fear." The term is associated with work by Banks Violette, David Noonan and Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, in particular, as well as Christian Jankowski, Marnie Weber, Boo Saville, Terence Koh, and Matthew Stone. Gavin also includes Olaf Breuning, Tal R, Dr Lakra, Abdul Vas, Joss McKinley, Jonathan Meese, Sue Webster, and Ricky Swallow. The artists involved often take inspiration from extreme metal, hardcore punk, motorcycle clubs, pornography, slasher films, and other elements of popular culture.

Geister / Ghosts

Pobocha, P: Mike Kelley: Deodorized Central Mass with Satell
This latest volume in the MoMA One on One series focuses on Mike Kelley¿s Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites (1991/1999). From the mid-1970s until his death in 2012, Mike Kelley produced some of the most challenging art of his time. Central to his artistic endeavors was a desire to plumb the American psyche in an attempt to reveal all which had been repressed, not only personally but also culturally. Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites (1991/1999) is an immersive installation featuring brightly colored stuffed animals that have been sewn together into large, irregularly-shaped spheres which hang directly from the ceiling, accompanied by ten vibrantly hued, abstract fiberglass sculptures installed on the walls along the perimeter of the gallery that periodically releasing a pine-scented mist into the air. The work not only overwhelms the senses, but also confounds the mind. Among Kelley¿s most ambitious works, it is a culmination of the artist¿s years-long investigation into the empathic relationships we form with inanimate objects. An essay by curator Paulina Pobocha provides an in-depth look at this singular artwork and contextualizes it within Kelley¿s deeply complex and at times unsettling artistic practice.

Mike Kelley: Materialist Aesthetics
Mike Kelley is best known as one of the most influential visual artists of his generation. But he was also an insightful theorist who wrote profusely about his work as well as on aesthetics in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, an epoch marked, in his view, by victim culture and the pop psychology phenomenon known as repressed memory syndrome. Mike Kelley: Materialist Aesthetics and Memory Illusions presents the artist in a new light, almost as an empirical philosopher delivering his position through art as well as writing. In a meticulous and transdisciplinary approach, Laura López Paniagua presents Kelley’s oeuvre as a stance in materialist aesthetics and weaves thoughtful relations between the artist’s critique, statements, and comments and the theories of thinkers such as Georges Bataille, Walter Benjamin, Pierre Bourdieu, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. López Paniagua focuses on Kelley’s artistic production between 1995 and his death in 2012, analyzing these works vis-à-vis the concept of memory, one of the artist’s obsessions and leitmotivs throughout his career.
