Percival Everett (born 1956) is an American writer and Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California.Everett lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife, novelist Danzy Senna.While completing his MFA degree at Brown University, Everett wrote his first novel, Suder (1983), about Craig Suder, a Seattle Mariners third baseman in major league slump, both on and off the field. Everett's second novel, Walk Me to the Distance (1985), was later re-interpreted with an altered plot as an ABC TV movie entitled Follow Your Heart. In this novel, David Larson returns from Vietnam and attempts to find the retarded son of a one-legged sheep rancher in Slut's Whole, Wyoming. Cutting Lisa (1986; re-issued 2000) begins with John Livesey meeting a man who has performed a caesarean section that prompts the protagonist to evaluate his relationships.

Approximate Gestures
In Approximate Gestures, Anthony Stewart argues that the writing of Percival Everett, the acclaimed author of Erasure and more than twenty other works of fiction, compels readers to retrain their thinking habits and to value uncertainty. Passing into the present
This book is the first full-length study of contemporary American fiction of passing. Its takes as its point of departure the return of racial and gender passing in the 1990s in order to make claims about wider trends in contemporary American fiction. The book accounts for the return of tropes of passing in fiction by Phillip Roth, Percival Everett, Louise Erdrich, Danzy Senna, Jeffrey Eugenides and Paul Beatty, by arguing meta-critical and meta-fictional tool. These writers are attracted to the trope of passing because passing narratives have always foregrounded the notion of textuality in relation to the (il)legibility of "black" subjects passing as white. The central argument of this book, then, is that contemporary narratives of passing are concerned with articulating and unpacking an analogy between passing and authorship.Aimed at students and researchers, it promises to inaugurate dialogue on the relationships between passing, postmodernism and authorship in contemporary American fiction.

Although to date Everett has published eighteen novels, three collections of short fiction, three poetry collections, and one children's book, his work has not garnered the critical attention that it deserves. Perhaps one of the most vexing problems scholars have had in trying to situate Everett's work is that they have found it difficult to place him and his work within a prescribed African American literary tradition. Because he happens to be African American, critics have expectations of so-called authentic African American fiction; however, his work often thwarts these expectations.In Perspectives on Percival Everett, scholars engage all of his creative production. On the one hand, Everett is an African American novelist. On the other hand, he pursues subject matters that seemingly have little to do with African American culture. The operative word here is "seemingly"; for as these essays demonstrate, Everett's works fall well within as well as outside of what most critics would deem the African American literary tradition.
