Daarna werkte hij aan de ontwikkeling van de grondslagen van de psychoanalyse. Zijn revolutionaire ideeën vonden hun weerslag in klassiek geworden werken als 'Die Traumdeutung' (1900), 'Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie' (1905) en dit boek, 'Vorlesungen über die Psychoanalyse' (1917), lezingen die hij tussen 1915 en1918 over deze ideeën hield voor artsen en geïnteresseerde leken. Toen Freud in de jaren dertig moest uitwijken voor de nazi's, verliet hij Wenen, waar hij bijna zijn hele leven had gewoond. Hij ging naar Londen, waar hij in 1939 overleed. Met zijn theorieën over de persoonlijkheidsleer, neurosen, perversies en tal van andere sociaal-psychologische verschijnselen heeft Freud een grote invloed uitgeoefend op de 20ste-eeuwse cultuur.
