    United States v. $124,700 in U.S. Currency

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. United States of America v. $124,700 in U.S. Currency, 05-3295 (8th Cir. 2006), was a decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit that was handed down on August 18, 2006.The unfamiliar form of the name - the defendant being an object, rather than a legal person - is because this is a jurisdiction in rem (power over objects) case, rather than the more familiar in personam (over persons) case. In current US legal practice, in rem is most widely used in the controversial doctrine of asset forfeiture, generally on the pretext of drug crimes, which allows a piece of property (in this case, $124,700 in cash) to be directly sued by and forfeited to the government, without either just compensation or the possessor (and presumptive owner) being convicted of a crime.

  5. Group Accounts Under UK GAAP

    Group Accounts Under UK GAAP

This title provides accountants and auditors with easy to follow and well structured guidance on the preparation of group accounts in line with UK GAAP. Group accounts must be prepared, by law, for medium-sized and large groups. Listed companies are required to prepare their accounts in line with International Financial Reporting Standards but larger unlisted companies can prepare their statements using UK GAAP. Groups are very common in the UK and are likely to become even more common when corporation tax rates increase in the future as there are various tax advantages to operating under a group structure.Group structures can vary (e.g. horizontal, vertical, hybrid, D-shaped|) and preparing financial accurate financial statements can be complex as a result. While there is a lot of guidance on producing accounts under IFRS, there is every little in evidence dealing with the UK GAAP rules. This title addresses this gap. The commentary identifies the differences between IFRS and UK GAAP in the treatment of group accounts. The differences between accounts produced pre and post Brexit are also covered. All commentary is supported throughout by the inclusion of worked practical examples based on the authors experience dealing with clients and running training courses. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Financial Reporting for Smaller Companies online service.

  6. Therav¿da Buddhist Encounters with Modernity

    Therav¿da Buddhist Encounters with Modernity

Although recent scholarship has shown that the term 'Therav¿da' in the familiar modern sense is a nineteenth- and twentieth-century construct, it is now used to refer to the more than 150 million people around the world who practice that form of Buddhism. Buddhist practices such as meditation, amulets, and merit making rituals have always been inseparable from the social formations that give rise to them, their authorizing discourses and the hegemonic relations they create. This book is composed of chapters written by established scholars in Buddhist studies who represent diverse disciplinary approaches from art history, religious studies, history and ethnography. It explores the historical forces, both external to and within the tradition of Therav¿da Buddhism and discusses how modern forms of Buddhist practice have emerged in South and Southeast Asia, in case studies from Nepal to Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia and Southwest China. Specific studies contextualize general trends and draw on practices, institutions, and communities that have been identified with this civilizational tradition throughout its extensive history and across a highly diverse cultural geography. This book foreground diverse responses among Therav¿dins to the encroaching challenges of modern life ways, communications, and political organizations, and will be of interest to scholars of Asian Religion, Buddhism and South and Southeast Asian Studies.

  8. The Religious Culture of India
    1. Friedhelm , Hardy

    The Religious Culture of India

This is a fresh and innovative exploration of traditional Indian religion and culture - an area that has fascinated and puzzled the West for centuries. Making use of his own original research, conducted over twenty-five years, Friedhelm Hardy aims at presenting the widest possible range of themes that have preoccupied Indian culture. He draws on a variety of sources, in various languages, and listens not only to what the philosopher or theologian in the classical Sanskrit texts has to say, but also to what folk and regional cults and cultures express in stories, myths and poetry. In an often humorous and always entertaining manner he reveals the colourful world of India to the non-specialist by making the three primary human drives of power, love and wisdom his focal points. Individual themes are frequently also illustrated from relevant Occidental sources. The book is based on public lectures delivered at the University of Oxford. While professional Indian studies become increasingly specialized, and popular interest in the subject loses itself in a mystical maze, this book presents a view of the whole culture from which has arisen the huge diversity of Indian religion in a manner that is both authoritative and accessible.

    Reimagining Rehabilitation

This book aims to make the case for and provide some of the resources necessary to reimagine rehabilitation for twenty-first-century criminal justice. Outlining an approach to rehabilitation which takes into account wider democratic processes, political structures and mechanisms of resource allocation, the authors develop a new model of rehabilitation comprising four forms - personal, legal, social and moral. Personal rehabilitation concerns how individuals make their journeys away from offending and towards reintegration and how they can be supported to do so, whilst legal rehabilitation concerns the role of the criminal courts in the process of restricting and then restoring the rights and status of citizens. Moral rehabilitation is concerned with the ethical basis of the interactions between the individual who has offended and the people and organisations charged with providing rehabilitative services. Social rehabilitation explores the crucial contribution civil society can make to rehabilitation, exploring this through the lens of citizenship, community and social capital.Drawing on the conceptual insights offered in the late Stan Cohen's seminal work - Visions of Social Control - and specifically his insistence that modern social institutions can aspire to doing good and doing justice, the authors argue that these values can underpin a moral pragmatism in designing social interventions that must go beyond achieving simply instrumental ends. Reimaging rehabilitation within the context of social action and social justice, this book is essential reading for students and scholars alike, particularly those engaged with criminal justice policy, probation and offender rehabilitation.

  12. Severe Adult Malnutrition
    1. Steve , Collins

    Severe Adult Malnutrition

Severe adult malnutrition is a common feature in both emergencies and developmental situations. This book provides a review of the history and issues surrounding adult malnutrition before going on to examine new data on the diagnosis and treatment of adult malnutrition. Drawing heavily on studies conducted during the height of severe famines in Somalia 1992, Sudan 1993 and Angola 1993, it presents original data on the most extreme cases of adult starvation ever reported in medical literature. The book establishes screening and diagnostic criteria to assess malnourished adults under the operational conditions seen during famine relief programmes. It provides evidence that measurement of middle upper arm circumference is an efficient tool for assessing admissions. Arm circumference measurements can be combined with simple clinical signs such as oedema, apparent dehydration and the ability to stand, to produce prognostic models useful in assessing admissions. The book also examines the ideal protein content of rehabilitation diets, concluding that diets with lower levels of protein can substantially reduce mortality during the initial phase of treatment.
