The High Seas
Ambition, Power, and Greed on the Unclaimed OceanIn this “essential guide to the half of our blue planet we call the high seas” (Will McCallum, author of How to Give Up Plastic), one of the world’s leading voices on the issue tracks the race to exploit and protect our last frontier. Two thirds of the world’s oceans lie beyond national borders. Owned by all nations and no nation simultaneously, the high seas are home to some of the richest and most biodiverse environments on the planet. But they are also home to exploitation on a scale that few of us have imagined. Here, out of sight and out of mind, industry and economic progress rule and lax enforcement and apathy are the status quo, underscored by a battle to control, profit from, protect, or obliterate the world’s largest, wildest commons. In this book, Heffernan uncovers the truth behind deeply exploitative fishing practices, investigates the potentially devastating impact of deep-sea mining, and holds to task the Silicon Valley interventionists whose solutions to climate change are often wildly optimistic, radically irresponsible, or both. This is a powerful and deeply researched manifesto calling for the protection and preservation of this final frontier.

Canopy of Titans
The Life and Times of the Great North American Temperate Rainforest"We've understood that the Amazon rainforest is crucial to the planet–but as this very fine book makes clear, no more important than the great temperate forests of the Pacific coast, or indeed any of the other remaining big, intact woodlands of the earth. Big old trees eat up and store carbon at dizzying rates; leaving them standing, and growing more of them, is an essential part of balancing the planet's climate math." — Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature

Novel Materials for Environmental Remediation Applications
Adsorption and BeyondDr. Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis obtained his PhD at the City University of New York, New York City, United States (February 2017). Nowadays, he serves as an assistant professor at the University Marie Curie Sklodowska (UMCS), Lublin, Poland. His research is focused on the development of composite porous nanomaterials for (photo)(sono)(piezo)catalytic technologies for biomass valorization and (micro)plastics upcycling to green chemicals, as well as for air and water purification, linking physicochemical properties to performance and involved mechanisms. He coauthored more than 140 articles, 1 monograph, 7 edited books, and 17 book chapters with over 7000 citations. Since 2021, he has been included in the Top 2% Most Influential Scientists worldwide (Stanford list, Elsevier). Lucas Meili is Professor in the Center of Technology at the Federal University of Alagoas, Maceió, Brazil. His areas of interest are focused in separation processes, water and wastewater treatment, and synthesis of materials, with a particular interest in adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. Dr. Ioannis Anastopoulos is an associate professor at the Department of Agriculture, University of Ioannina, Arta, Greece. He has conducted postdoctoral research at the Agricultural Research Institute (Cyprus), the University of Patras (Greece), the University of Cyprus (Cyprus), and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece). His research focuses on the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils following the application of organic and inorganic materials, the development of adsorbent materials for wastewater treatment, and the use of organic amendments for soil remediation. He has authored more than 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals with over 12,000 citations and has been included among the Top 2% Scientists worldwide for the years 2019–24 (Stanford list, Elsevier).

Mössbauer Spectroscopy of Environmental Materials and Their Industrial Utilization
From the reviews: What is the niche for Mossbauer spectroscopy in the study of minerals and their products? Why is it currently under-utilized in areas such as mineral processing? These two questions, put by the authors in the introduction of the book, serve as a guiding line through all 12 chapters. The authors are well known researchers in the Mossbauer community... The Data Analysis and Interpretation chapter is highly recommended reading for all Mossbauer spectroscopists working in any application area. The problems of ambiguity of spectra interpretation are usually under-addressed in publications... Backed up by 966 references, 37 book references, 19 major review references, and 14 major conference proceedings, the book is also a valuable source of reference information. From Mossbauer Spectroscopy Newsletter, June 2005 (Volume 28, Number 6) "This book is devoted to ... the technique and practice of Mossbauer spectroscopy, and these alone make the book worth buying. For anyone wishing for an in-depth discussion of this technique ... this book will be invaluable. ... The applications presented are useful ... . This book will be most useful to mineralogists (and their students) ... . The background presented here will provide an excellent jumping-off point for further explorations into the many different applications of this technique." (M. Darby Dyar, American Mineralogist, Vol. 93, 2008)
