Aantekeningen uit het dodenhuis en Vernederd en gekrenkt zijn bijna gelijktijdig geschreven, in 1860, en ze zijn de meest autobiografische werken in Dostojevski's oeuvre, maar tegelijkertijd volkomen verschillend. Aantekeningen uit het dodenhuis is een verhaal over de lotgevallen van de schrijver in een Siberische strafkolonie en daarmee het allereerste voorbeeld van Russische kampliteratuur. Het is een rauw, maar scherpzinnig en objectief boek over de zware criminelen tussen wie Dostojevski vier jaar lang opgesloten zat. Hij laat zich erin kennen als een onnavolgbaar psycholoog en een meeslepend schrijver. Vernederd en gekrenkt is een echte Peterburgse roman.
