In 1990 onderneemt een onderzoeksteam van de University of Cambridge een expeditie naar nationaal park Nechisar in Ethiopië. Ze verzamelen zoogdieren, vogels, vlinders, libellen, reptielen én een vleugel van een nog te identificeren vogel. Argeloos wordt de vleugel opgeborgen in een bruine papieren zak; hoe bijzonder hij is beseft op dat moment niemand. Pas jaren later wordt de vleugel uit de zak gehaald en bestudeerd door experts van het British Natural History Museum. Na lang discussiëren beslissen de wetenschappers dat het om een nieuwe soort nachtzwaluw gaat: de Caprimulgus solala (van solus ‘alleen’ en ala ‘vleugel’).
