Quiet Eccentricities

Drawing upon aspects of photography, sculpture, assemblage and text, Lewis Koch calls attention to the often unremarked upon elements of everyday life. Over the past fifty years, he has presented installations in garages, on kiosks and billboards, as well as in museums and galleries, in solo exhibitions internationally.  His work is held in permanent collections which include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and National Gallery of Art (both DC), Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Museum of Fine Arts (Houston). Jill Sterrett is Director of Collections at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Before her tenure in Wisconsin, she held leadership positions at the Smart Museum of Art (Chicago), and for 28 years at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. There, she led the conservation department during its formative years, establishing SFMOMA as a pioneer in the field of time-based media conservation. Lisa Stone is an independent curator/collaborator, preservation consultant, and retired (2020) curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, both at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She works, seasonally, in her studios––indoors and out––in rural Wisconsin.

Ein Album aus Auschwitz

Erstmals wird eine zentrale Bildquelle des Holocaust sowohl komplett wiedergegeben als auch lückenlos die Überlieferungsgeschichte geklärt.Es sind Bilder, die sich in unser ikonografisches Gedächtnis eingebrannt haben. Wir kennen sie aus Ausstellungen und Dokumentationen. Sie zeigen, wie Jüdinnen und Juden aus Ungarn in Auschwitz-Birkenau ankommen und einen mörderischen Musterungsprozess durchlaufen. Zurück bleiben einige wenige Menschen, die zur Arbeit gezwungen werden, und Berge von Gepäck. Die Fotos wurden zwischen Mai und August 1944 von den SS-Fotografen Bernhard Walter und Ernst Hofmann angefertigt und in einem Album zusammengestellt, um den Massenmord an den Jüdinnen und Juden aus Ungarn als effizienten Prozess zu präsentieren.Tal Bruttmann, Stefan Hördler und Christoph Kreutzmüller legen mit diesem Buch eine Analyse des Albums vor, die nach ihrem ersten Erscheinen 2019 längst als »Meilenstein« gilt. Sie erschließen nicht nur den Kontext des »Ungarn-Programms« und die Hintergründe der Täter, erstmals klären sie auch lückenlos die Überlieferungsgeschichte des Albums und rekonstruieren die ursprüngliche Abfolge der verschiedenen Fotoserien. Hieraus gewinnen sie neue Erkenntnisse, was auf den Fotos des Albums en detail zu sehen ist - und was ausgeblendet wird.
