Finalmente sembra arrivato il futuro, le vecchie e stantie tradizioni sono superate, anche la religione ebraica della famiglia non è più una questione importante; è il mondo nuovo, un altro inizio, l'era sovietica, in cui i grattacieli spuntano da un giorno all'altro e il paese si avvia verso la prosperità socialista. In breve tempo, Debora trova lavoro e conosce un giovane e affascinante ufficiale di nome Samuel, che si sta addestrando per diventare pilota di caccia. Le cose, tra alti e bassi, sembrano mettersi bene per lei, che riesce anche a realizzare il suo sogno di iscriversi all'Università. Ma le prospettive di Debora - e dell'Ucraina - si offuscano rapidamente.
