Description
Hellfire Awaits: 150 Years of Redruth RFC is a tale of mud and blood and frequent outbreaks of violence. Cornish rugby developed an uncompromising style of its own fuelled by traditional and often bitter local rivalries. It became Cornwall’s champion club, carving out a reputation across and far beyond Cornwall.
"Nick's sense of historical balance stops Hellfire Awaits from being a mere exercise in pro-Red tubthumping. It is this balance that carries the story, as does Nick’s writing, and ingrained knowledge of Cornish rugby."
"Nick Serpell, a fount of all knowledge on the Reds and Cornish rugby generally, has risen to the occasion with a beautifully crafted club history to ensure Redruth's legacy remains intact for posterity."
"If you want to understand the rivalries, the passion and the history of rugby union in Cornwall this book is the place to start."
Nick Serpell is a former BBC journalist. In his early career he was the sports editor at BBC Radio Cornwall and commentated on many rugby matches, including two County Championship finals at Twickenham. He went on to work in network television and wrote extensively for the BBC website. He has been a proud, if sometimes distant, member of the Redruth club for more than 30 years.
