Selimpäa, known in Byzantine times as Epibates is a small town in the European part of Turkey, near Silivri in Istanbul Province. The city is located on the northwestern coast of the Marmara Sea, 50 km (31 mi) west of Istanbul and 13 km (8.1 mi) east from Silivri on the highway D.100. The town is a native place of the Orthodox saint Paraskevi. Selimpäa is today a summer resort with long sand beaches. The Byzantine Empire (or Byzantium) was the Eastern Roman Empire during the periods of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, centered on the capital of Constantinople. Known simply as the Roman Empire (Greek: ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿, Basileia Rh¿mai¿n) or Romania (¿¿¿¿¿¿¿, Rh¿manía) to its inhabitants and neighbours, the Empire was the direct continuation of the Ancient Roman State. It is today distinguished from ancient Rome proper insofar as the Empire was oriented towards Greek culture, characterised by Christianity rather than Roman paganism, and predominantly Greek-speaking rather than Latin-speaking
