The Anthropocene, the era in which man completely dominates nature with disastrous consequences, is forcing us to radically rethink the role we have given nature in recent decades. There is a renewed interest in the theme of the garden among contemporary makers. It is not a romantic desire that drives them, but rather a call for a new awareness of our relationship with the earth. Through many different essays and an extensive abecedarium, On the Necessity of Gardening reflects on the garden as a metaphor for society.

Nachtboot
In Nachtboot worden vragen opgeroepen over de authenticiteit van het individu en zijn omgeving aan de hand van kunst, de stad en (gecultiveerde) natuur. In al haar gedichten doet Barnas een poging iets waarachtigs te beschrijven en te veroorzaken, bewust van het feit dat elke beschrijving een nieuwe laag aan de gemaakte wereld toevoegt. Daardoor functioneert de taal in deze gedichten als instrument, maar ook als stoorzender, en ultieme vorm tegelijk - waarin steeds een onverwachte wending plaatsvindt die alleen kan bestaan in de ruimte van het gedicht. Bij Barnas is elk gedicht een ruimte die de lezer kan betreden. Gedichten over wonen op verschillende plekken, vormexperimenten, soms meertalig maar steeds lyrisch, en klank- en beeldrijk.

Waarom raakt een kunstwerk je als je in het ziekenhuis bent, kan een gedicht je tot tranen roeren, troost muziek of roept een verhaal fijne herinneringen op? Word je een betere dokter als je naar kunst kijkt? Waarom wil een kunstenaar graag een werk voor het ziekenhuis maken? En waarom betrekken wetenschappers kunst in hun onderzoek? Lang niet al die vragen kan samensteller Sabrina Kamstra zelf beantwoorden, daarom vroeg ze patiënten, kunstenaars, curatoren, artsen, wetenschappers en studenten te reageren vanuit hun eigen invalshoek en achtergrond, expertise en ervaring.
