Een ongemakkelijke plek
In april 2021 reisden auteur Jonathan Littell en fotograaf Antoine d’Agata naar Kyiv om onderzoek te doen voor een nieuw boek in opdracht van het Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre. Babi Jar was de plek waar in 1941 meer dan 33.000 Joden door de nazi’s werden vermoord. Maar voordat het boek voltooid kon worden, begon op 24 februari 2022 de Russische invasie van Oekraïne. Het werd onmogelijk om alleen over Babi Jar te schrijven. De bezoeken aan Oekraïne om overlevenden, soldaten en vrienden te interviewen resulteerden in een grimmig bewijs van opeengestapelde verschrikkingen, de echo’s van de geschiedenis en een falend collectief geheugen.

Una mattina di settembre, poco dopo aver concluso la prima stesura di questo libro, Jonathan Littell riceve una mail: Natal'ja Estemirova, una delle principali attiviste per i diritti umani a Groznyi, è stata sequestrata. La sua visibilità, cosi si credeva, l'avrebbe tenuta al sicuro: la stessa cosa si diceva anche della sua amica Anna Politkovskaja. La sera di quello stesso giorno il cadavere di Natal'ja viene rinvenuto in un bosco alla frontiera con l'Inguscezia, crivellato di colpi. La notizia getta una nuova luce sulle due settimane trascorse nel Caucaso da Littell, costringendolo di fatto a riscrivere il reportage del suo soggiorno alla corte del presidente Ramzan Kadyrov nell'anno terzo del suo governo. Littell è già stato in Cecenia, durante le due guerre, in missione per alcune organizzazioni umanitarie e ha sempre mantenuto stretti contatti con il paese: ricorda bene, pertanto, i giorni in cui la vita di un ceceno non valeva un copeco. La "cecenizzazione", cioè la decisione presa da Vladimir Putin nel 2002 di insediare nel paese un forte potere filorusso, composto principalmente da ex separatisti, nell'indagine di Littell si svela essere il nome presentabile di un sistema che ha fatto della corruzione più sfrenata, dell'islamizzazione a oltranza, della cooptazione forzata dei ribelli, della tortura e dell'omicidio, gli strumenti quotidiani per il controllo del territorio.

A Brief Incursion into Fascist TerritoryJonathan Littell was born in 1967 in New York City and grew up in France. He worked for many years in humanitarian emergency operations in Bosnia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, D. R. Congo, and other countries. His literary debut, The Kindly Ones (HarperCollins 2009), won the Prix Goncourt when it was first published in France as Les Bienveillantes in 2006, and has since been translated into nearly 40 languages. His other works available in English include The Fata Morgana Books (Two Lines Press 2013), Triptych: Three Studies after Francis Bacon (Notting Hill Editions 2013), and Syrian Notebooks: Inside the Homs Uprising (Verso 2015). His first feature documentary film, Wrong Elements, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2016. Klaus Theweleit is a German sociologist. He is best known for his two-volume study of the psychology of Nazism, Male Fantasies (University of Minnesota Press, 1987–89), first published in Germany as Männerphantasien in 1977–78. Max Lawton is a translator of Russian, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Turkish. He is the translator of eight novels by Vladimir Sorokin, including Telluria (New York Review Books Classics 2022) and Their Four Hearts (Dalkey Archive Press 2022).
