Beijing, which translates as "Northern Capital", but is occasionally romanized as Peking, is the capital and second most populous city (with more than 21.7 million inhabitants) after Shanghai (with 24.1 million inhabitants) of the People’s Republic of China. With regard to culture, education and politics, Beijing is considered the center of the PRC, whereas Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic importance. Beijing is also a hub for all means of transportation: railways, roadways and air traffic, both national and international, entering and leaving in all directions. 3,000 year old Beijing, rich in history, is home to many attractions reflecting Chinese culture and tradition. The Forbidden City, the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace or the Temple of Heaven, are just a few sites which have remained unscathed by invasion, revolution or more recently - intense urbanisation.
