La Sessantasei diverrà, per tutti, la strada per antonomasia, immortalata nelle foto di Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Robert Frank che ne racconteranno le svolte, le crepe, i bordi polverosi, le ombre lunghe, le distese vuote e le vite precarie che vi scorrono accanto. Un nastro d'asfalto che si sarebbe snodato per 3.617 chilometri, attraverso tre fusi orari e otto stati: dall'Illinois alla California, ovvero dal lago Michigan all'Oceano Pacifico. Un paesaggio che, nel tempo, si sarebbe popolato di motel, insegne al neon, pompe di benzina, officine improvvisate, diner e centinaia di figure che avrebbero definito la vita quotidiana dell'America on the road: cameriere, benzinai, cuochi, camionisti, meccanici, venditori ambulanti, poliziotti, addetti ai motel. A metà degli anni Cinquanta la Route 66 non ce la faceva più a reggere il volume di traffico che vi si era riversato e nel 1956 il Congresso votò la legge che istituiva l'attuale sistema di autostrade interstatali. Fu la condanna a morte per la Route 66 che fu definitivamente dismessa nel 1985. In California, moncherini della vecchia strada si trovano ancora in centri dai nomi esotici nei pressi dell'area del deserto del Mojave dove, durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, si addestrarono le truppe corazzate al comando del generale Patton.
