Chris Wilkes was educated at Dulwich College in London, after which he left Britain for New Zealand at 19, where he completed a biology degree at Victoria University. A Fulbright fellowship allowed him to complete a PhD at Stanford University, USA. He returned to New Zealand and taught sociology at Massey University for 12 years. In 1993, he moved to the United States, where he taught at Stanford, the University of California, Davis, Lewis and Clark College, Portland, and Pacific University. He has authored seven academic books, four novels and over 80 articles. These include books focused on Jane Austen (2013), the State (2018), and socialism in Britain. (2024) He is now Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Pacific University.
