This CSIS report argues that the United States needs a robust force posture, including U.S. Army presence, in Europe on NATO's eastern flank to deter future Russian aggression. A significant downsizing of U.S. forces in Europe would weaken deterrence and embolden a revanchist Russia.
Seth G. Jones is senior vice president, Harold Brown Chair, director of the International Security Program, and director of the Transnational Threats Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington. D.C. Seamus P. Daniels is a fellow for Defense Budget Analysis in the International Security Program at CSIS. Catrina Doxsee is a fellow with the Transnational Threats Project at CSIS.
