Omschrijving

Dr. Trae Stewart previously worked as a tenured full professor at Texas State University and the University of Central Florida. Prior to joining the University of Colorado, he worked as a Behavioral Health RN at the Cleveland Clinic. He is a Board Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Dr. Stewart has taught nearly two dozen university courses ranging from large lecture to seminar formats, from face-to-face to online, and co-instructed courses. In his courses, he advocates for an assets-based approach to education, which problematizes concepts of power and privilege in communities. Organizational structures/practices and personal mindsets that marginalize and disenfranchise people of color, non-heterosexual identities, and varying exceptionalities are questioned through engagement within communities of difference and through supportive reflective activities. He has received the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award (2007) and a Teaching Incentive ProgramAward (2009) while at the University of Central Florida.

In terms of research, Dr. Stewart has received over $600,000 in grant funding. He has published almost 50 refereed and editor-invited book chapters and journal articles. He has also co-edited two books that critically examine pedagogies of engagement within diverse cultural settings and from varying epistemologies. Dr. Stewart's scholarship is recognized by his peers, resulting in numerous research awards, fellowships, and consultations. For example, he traveled to Palestine and Afghanistan to consult on a national youth leadership development project utilizing social entrepreneurship, public health, and service-learning as cornerstone activities. He is a recognized Fulbright Specialist to Chile (canceled due to COVID-19).

In terms of administrative and leadership experience, he held directorships at the secondary, undergraduate, graduate, and non-formal education levels. In these positions, he managed projects, fieldexperiences/internships, presented at international conferences, and facilitated workshops. These paid experiences are complemented by his service to professional associations, including my election as Executive Chair of the Board of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement. He earned the Dean’s award for Excellence in Service (2014) at Texas State University and the Distinguished Service Award from the International Association for Research on Service-Learning & Community Engagement (2011).
