The essays in this book – forming neither a casebook nor a 'perplex' – were written because their authors wanted to understand something specific about King Lear, one of Shakespeare's very complicated plays.
Rosalie L. Colie (1924-1972) studied at Vassar and Columbia and taught at Barnard, Oxford, Yale, Toronto, and Brown. At the time of her death in 1972 she was chairman of the Department of Comparative Literature at Brown University. F.T. Flahiff is a professor emeritus in the Department of English, St. Michael's College, University of Toronto.
